F is for Figs
Figs are one of my favourite fruits and this year black figs, which I prefer, have been plentiful and delicious. Sadly, they were mostly sold in plastic containers probably because they're easily bruised and supermarkets prioritise profit, not environmental concerns.
Figs are a wonderful nutritional rich fruit in a small, beautiful package. I always peal the fresh fruit because the skin may be bitter from insecticide sprays. Figs are a great accompaniment to cheese.
Figs are a good source of fiber so a great help if you struggle with constipation. They contain the following vitamins and minerals:
- Vitamin A which helps maintain a good immune system and supports healthy vision.
- Vitamin C is a key antioxidant essential for skin health also helps in the repair and maintenance of cartilage, bones and teeth and provides a host health benefits.
- Vitamin K important for blood clotting and bone health.
- Figs are a good source of the B vitamins which are important for a healthy nervous system.
- Figs also contain calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc.
Dried figs contain approximately six times as many calories as fresh figs so should be eaten in moderation, but the drying process also concentrates the nutrients which makes the dried fruit a rich source of potassium which may help reduce blood pressure and water retention.
Live with joy and health 💚
