H is for Herbs that Heal
I know I included H is for herbs last time but this time I want you to consider their healing properties. There is no doubt about the healing properties of herbs, they have been used to heal the body for thousands of years. During my degree, I studied herbology and found it absolutely fascinating.
As I have recently been talking about gut health it seems logical to include some herbs known to support digestion. The following herbs can help ease flatulence (always embarrassing) and colic those horrible stomach gripes. I list them in my order of use and preference. Many of these herbs are traditionally used in cooking, making them easy to incorporate into daily life:
- Mint – Particularly peppermint is one of the most effective and well-research herbs for digestive health. It contains menthol a natural compound that relaxes and soothes the gastrointestinal tract. Known to reduce cramping, spasms and bloating. It is anti-inflammatory and may help balance gut bacteria.
- Ginger – A wonderful herb, it warms the digestive system and is commonly used in Chinese herbal medicine. Ginger may reduce nausea; it aids digestion and reducing bloating. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect on the intestines.
- Chamomile – If stress and anxiety are causing you stomach problems this herb is relaxing and helps soothe the stomach lining and relaxes stomach muscles.
- Cinnamon – Stimulates digestive enzymes, helps reduce bloating and may soothe indigestion. It also has a mild calming effect and helps expel gas from the digestive tract.
There are so many benefits from including herbs in our diet. By making a conscious effort to include these beneficial herbs more regularly, we can help support our health and wellness in a natural and accessible way. I hope this will be a gentle encouragement to make herbs a greater part of your everyday cooking and routines.
Please note, if you are using cinnamon daily or therapeutically, remember to choose Ceylon Cinnamon not Cassia which is commonly found in Supermarkets and may be harmful when taken daily.
