Alphabet of Healthy Foods – B is for Blueberries

We have had such an amazing summer, and many fruits have enjoyed all the sunshine including healthy and delicious blueberries which fortunately we can find in abundance in most supermarkets. It is interesting that when I was younger you rarely saw blueberries but I am pleased to say that as their health benefits have been extolled then they have become part of many peoples regular diet.

Blueberries are packed with a range of essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are often cited as a β€œSuperfood,” look out for my blog about Superfoods. Blueberries contain the following:

Vitamins and Minerals

🫐 Vitamin C – Blueberries are a good source of vitamin C, which supports immune function, collagen production, and skin health.

🫐 Vitamin K – They contain vitamin K, important for blood clotting and bone health.

🫐 Vitamin A – In the form of beta-carotene, which contributes to eye health and immune function.

🫐 Vitamin E – An antioxidant that I hope by now you understand we all need to protect us from many major diseases.

🫐 B Vitamins – Blueberries contain small amounts of several B vitamins, which support the nervous system.

🫐 Manganese – Blueberries are an excellent source of manganese, which is essential for bone health, metabolism, and antioxidant functions.

🫐 Copper – Involved in red blood cell formation and maintaining healthy blood vessels.

🫐 Iron – While not a high source, blueberries contain small amounts of iron, which helps in oxygen transport.

🫐 Magnesium – Contributes to muscle and nerve function, as well as bone health.

I hope you will now include Blueberries in your diet because with all these health benefits they are the fruit we all need.Β

Finally, if you struggle with regular bouts of cystitis, blueberries inhibit bacteria e.g. E.coli which can spread up the urinary tract and may provide protection from this horrible infection.
