D is for Dickinson Pumpkin

D is for Dickinson Pumpkin

I know this is a bit if a cheat but as we are fast approaching Pumpkin Season, I hope you will forgive me. Dickinson Pumpkin is available in the UK, but it is mainly produced and sold in America where it is often sold as puree for Pumpkin Pie. You can find it here in specialist stores or via the internet. Their elongated shape means they are not as good for carving those wonderful fun faces that sit outside many people’s front doors for Halloween.

There are many health benefits of eating pumpkins, and they are readily available now. Pumpkins are packed with Vitamin A, C, and E, potassium, lutein and zeaxanthin.

  • Pumpkins provide high levels of vitamin A (beta carotene) excellent for a strong immune system which helps fight all infections.
  • They contain good levels of Vitamin C a powerful antioxidant protecting us from free radical damage while improving immune function. I take high levels of vitamin C, as a supplement daily, and have found it helps improve my overall health.
  • Pumpkins contain Potassium an important mineral for supporting heart health.
  • Pumpkins contain good levels of lutein and zeaxanthin that may protect us from age-related macular degeneration.
  • Pumpkin seeds contain tryptophan which is an amino acid that is used in the production of serotonin and helps improve sleep.

Pumpkins are also high in fibre which supports good digestion and are low in calories. Remember that Pumpkin Pie also needs delicious pastry which is high in calories but as you know I believe in the 80/20 rule so if most of the time you choose healthy nutritious food then a treat sometimes is good for our happiness. Go ahead and enjoy your Pumpkin Pie!

Live with joy and health. 💚
