N is for Neeps
HEALTH MATTERS – ALPHABET OF HEALTHY FOODS – N IS FOR NEEPS!
I thought I would try and bring a little humour into this series of the Alphabet of Healthy Foods so today we are looking at the benefits of eating Neeps! I am sure most of you will have heard of Neeps and Tatties.
Neeps are the traditional accompaniment to haggis which as we celebrated Burns night recently seems appropriate. Of course, neeps are better known as Swedes as they came to England from Sweden but in Scotland, they are still often referred to as Turnips or Neeps. I hope you are smiling now as we discuss the health benefits of Neeps (Swedes - a bit of a cheat really)!
🌱 Neeps are a member of the cruciferous vegetable family which makes them a powerful antioxidant. Research has shown that a compound contained in this vegetable, isothiocyanates triggers an enzyme which helps protect our DNA from damage by carcinogens.
🌱 The Vitamin C content helps build a good immune system and reduces fatigue.
🌱 Neeps are a useful source of vitamins, E, K and B6 and contain potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.
🌱 Most importantly they are a low-calorie food, which is high in fibre. The fibre content in Neeps slows down digestion which may help manage blood sugar levels.
I always buy a large Neep (Swede) when all my family come for dinner. I simply chop it into small chunks, boil it until soft in lightly salted water, then mash well with butter and black pepper. It is great because you can prepare this early and simply reheat it when required.
You can also add Neeps to soups and stews. As you see there are many health benefits to be gained by eating this vegetable and they are plentiful now and inexpensive too so do try them and enjoy!
Live with joy and health 💚
